The town of Muskogee, Oklahoma is paying tribute to Merle Haggard with a public memorial. The “Muskogee Phoenix” reports, the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame has received approval for a monument in Haggard’s memory on the north lawn of the Muskogee Civic Center. The memorial was originally supposed to include a bronze sculpture of Haggard sitting on a bench with a guitar case and a hat, but it may now be expanded to include a piece that Haggard designed himself, originally to go on his ranch. A timeline for the memorial’s construction hasn’t been revealed yet. Hall of Fame Executive Director Jim Blair told the “Muskogee Phoenix,” “The bench will be great, but what a story to tell; to have a memorial standing next to it that was designed by Merle himself.” Haggard released his signature song “Okie from Muskogee” in September 1969.
